Meet Vusi Kunene Matlou, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science student at Eduvos Midrand Campus and the current President of the Coding Club. With a deep interest in cybersecurity, financial technology (fintech) security, and blockchain, Vusi’s journey in IT began back in high school when he wrote his first line of HTML during a Computer Applications Technology (CAT) class. From that moment, he knew he’d found his passion, and he’s been building on it ever since.
Initially established by Eduvos Alum Robert Hindle, the Coding Club aimed at creating a supportive community and providing a space for learning, collaboration, and growth. Under his leadership, the club went beyond teaching programming basics, also preparing students for job interview coding assessments and fostering a supportive community. For Vusi, the club has always been about more than coding. It’s about growing together, building together, and opening doors for others to explore technology.
When asked why he chose Eduvos, Vusi points to Eduvos’ practical, hands-on approach to learning, which he believes is essential for excelling in the tech industry.
Studying a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Eduvos has allowed him to balance theoretical knowledge with real-world application.
“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value,” says Vusi.
One standout opportunity was being awarded the Pernod Ricard Bursary, which gave him the resources and confidence to pursue both his academic dreams and his leadership goals with the Coding Club.
Under Vusi’s leadership, the Eduvos Midrand Coding Club has achieved several exciting milestones, including:
These initiatives have showcased the power of student-led innovation and the importance of creating spaces where knowledge is shared freely.
Vusi envisions the Coding Club growing into a national student movement, expanding across all Eduvos campuses in South Africa. His dream is to build a sponsored ecosystem where students can access cutting-edge resources, mentorship, and opportunities to take part in real-world tech challenges.
For his personal journey, Vusi hopes to advance in cybersecurity and fintech, working to secure financial systems while also developing tech-driven African solutions through blockchain, ethical hacking, and financial technologies.
Vusi’s advice to students aspiring to start their own initiatives is simple but powerful:
“Start small but start with purpose. We had no budget, no official platform, just an idea and a vision. Passion and persistence will attract others to your cause. Stay humble, surround yourself with a committed team, and always keep your ‘why’ at the centre. You don’t need to be perfect; what matters is your willingness to learn, lead, and lift others as you grow.”
From a single idea to a movement inspiring hundreds of students, the Eduvos Midrand Campus Coding Club is proof of the transformative power of student leadership and collaboration. Through the passion of leaders like Vusi, Eduvos continues to be a place where ideas grow, and futures are built.
