The future of science belongs to you, the next generation of visionary innovators in biotechnology and biomedicine.

The 2nd Annual Eduvos BioVerse Competition invites third-year and honours-level students from private and public higher education institutions to showcase bold scientific innovations, ingenuity, and passion to address real-world challenges unique to our continent, our people, and our resources.

This year we are excited to announce 3 categories for entry:

  1. Biomedicine
  2. Biotechnology
  3. Food Security and Sustainability

Finalists in these categories will compete for the grand prize of a mentorship/internship with a leading industry partner.

The Faculty of Applied Science at Eduvos will host the Eduvos BioVerse Competition on 30 October 2026 at our Midrand Campus.

Designed to spark a culture of scientific innovation and entrepreneurship, the Eduvos BioVerse Competition provides access to mentorship, industry exposure, and funding opportunities, empowering you to bring groundbreaking solutions to life, for Africa and beyond.

Entry Categories.

Choose the category that best fits your innovation and submit your proposal.

1
Biomedicine
Diagnostics, drug delivery, medical devices, public health interventions, and community-based healthcare solutions.
2
Biotechnology
Genetic engineering, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, AI in bioscience, biomaterials, and biotech entrepreneurship.
3
Food Security and Sustainability
Environmental biotechnology, sustainable development in food and water, and responsible natural resource management.

Competition Details.

How to Enter.

The Eduvos BioVerse Competition is open to all third-year and honours-level science students from private and public higher education institutions in South Africa.

To enter, submit a proposal that outlines your groundbreaking bio-innovation or bio-entrepreneurship project. Proposals will be evaluated on merit, feasibility, impact, and innovation.

Your proposal should cover:

  • The problem you're solving.
  • Your innovation or solution.
  • Its potential impact.
  • The business case and feasibility.
  • Your plan to make it happen.

How the competition works:

Two participants will be selected from each of the three entry categories, giving a total of six finalists. Those six finalists will then compete in a sudden-death round to determine first, second, and third place.

Competition Prizes

The Eduvos BioVerse Competition prizes for the winners include:

  • First Prize: Publication support of up to R 15,000 and conference attendance support of up to R10,000, subject to existing research support conditions.
  • Second Prize: Publication support of up to R 15,000, subject to existing research support conditions.

Our sponsors will also be contributing the following:
  • AIMS will sponsor a mentorship programme focused on professional development support for participating students.
  • UVU Bio will sponsor access to a three-month incubator programme package, which includes mentorship and skills development opportunities.
  • Inqaba Biotech will sponsor a voucher valued at R 1,500.
  • Twenty20Science will sponsor a skills-building preparatory workshop.

All finalists in the competition will receive:
  • The opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of expert judges and expand their professional network.
  • Media features across Eduvos social media and website platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Direct exposure to industry professionals and eminent scientists.
  • An official Certificate of Participation to add to their CV.

Terms and Conditions.

General Terms
  1. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Entries must comply with all relevant South African regulations.
    • Each applicant must provide accurate and complete information in the application form.
    • Only one entry is permitted per individual.
  2. Judging and Selection:
    • Entries will be reviewed by a panel of experts.
    • Two finalists will be selected from each category to compete at the finals in Midrand, Gauteng.
  3. Prize:
    • Winners will be selected and prizes handed out at the finals.

Student Entrants
  1. Eligibility:
    • Applicants must be registered students at an accredited South African Higher Education institution in 2026.
    • Entrants must be 35 years or younger.
    • Eligible students include those in their 3rd year of undergraduate studies or pursuing an Honours degree in 2026.
  2. Innovation Criteria:
    • Research ethics are upheld to the highest standard at Eduvos. Please ensure that your application is accompanied by either an approved ethical clearance certificate from Eduvos or proof that an application for ethical clearance has been submitted. No finalists will be permitted to attend the final pitch event without ethical clearance having been granted. Eduvos students can contact their lecturers/programme convenors to access the application form. External applicants can email appscifrec@eduvos.com to receive the application forms.
  3. Winning Criteria:
    • Scientific credibility.
    • Market/industry/community need.
    • Competitive edge and feasibility of implementation.

  1. The organizers reserve the right to amend or cancel the competition due to unforeseen circumstances.
  2. Participants agree to adhere to the rules and decisions of the judging panel, which are final and binding.
  3. All personal information collected will be processed in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
